November 3, 2015
Dear families,

I thought I'd better send out the next info from our class.

1. Several parents have asked if their child could retake the math test. The answer is no. It would be a great idea to have them correct the ones they missed. Math adds upon each other, so it's important to know the information.
2. The book report  "teepee" page went home today. This month we thought it would be fun for the kids to read an Indian legend or story with an Indian as a main character. Then do the book report about that. I did "The Sign Of The Beaver" because it is also a battle of the books reader. A shorter story is also completely acceptable like "Arrow To The Sun." If your child did not bring home a legend from the library or from my classroom library, you can google in "Indian legends" and come up with something. The book report is due on Tuesday the 24th.
3. We are going to begin a "shrunken-head Indian" apple sculpture. The kids will need an apple (already starting to shrivel would be perfect) and an empty individual-size plastic water bottle you would take to a ballgame or somewhere. We will probably start the carving on Monday.
4. We are now beginning our division study in math. The students who don't have their multiplication facts memorized yet are really struggling. Please do some flashcards with them each night at home. Thank You!
5. We have our super helpers for our field trip. Thanks!!!!!!

Dear families,

By now some of you are dieing! The homework today is for bonus points only for the children who want to expand and go further. The story is from our new unit on the Middle Ages. This is a factual unit and will teach the writing skills of opinion and persuasive papers.
Now you can take your heart back out of your throat and enjoy the night.

October 2, 2015
Dear families,

Just a quick note before I leave school...
• Monday is our chapter 2 GoMath test which means Monday is the last day to turn in any late homework for chapter 2. After that , no makeup homework for that chapter will be accepted.

• We are starting our Native American/ Indian of Utah study. In a few weeks the kids will be making mini dioramas of the different tribes homes and villages. Be saving a couple of egg cartons. toothpicks, skewers, tiny tree branches, anything else you can think of that could be used to make tee pees, wickiups, etc.
• Monday we are also beginning the second unit in our new reading program. It is entitled "The Middle Ages." I think the kids will love to learn about knights and castles. It should be fun.

September 23, 2015

Just a few things you should know:
• Yesterday the kids were to have checked out a "Battle Of The Books" book to start reading. If your child didn't return books, this will have to wait until next week. Some kids cannot read on that high of a level, so parents are allowed to read it WITH them. Then in the 3rd week in October the students will do a book report on it.
• If you haven't yet signed an electronic permission for safe schools and acceptable computer use, your child has a hard copy in his/her backpack to sign. We want to get the kids on the Chrome Books.
• Remember school pictures this Friday. All children will have a photo taken for the class picture unless a written note is sent in.
• Friday is our walking field trip to SUU so return those permission slips.

 • We'll see you at parent teacher conferences next week :)

September 18th
Dear families,

Your child is bringing home another progress report. Please look it over and sign that you have seen it. When your child returns it, s/he earns 5 points.
Attached also is the Parent Teacher Conference schedule for September 28, 29 and 30. The children who have siblings are already scheduled as a convenience to you. All others haven't been scheduled yet. I try to give you a chance to sign up for a time that is convenient for you and your time schedule. Please sign up for a first and second choice. I will write your child's name in the slot that you choose. It is on a first come, first served basis.
Have a great weekend!

September 9, 2015
Dear families,
FYI:
1. Bash and Splash is Saturday at 6:30 at the Aquatic Center if you want to go. Tickets are on sale early here at the school if you want to get them now.
2. Monday the 14th will be the school-wide health screening, dental screening, vision screening.
3. Friday the 18th will be the 4th grade Canyon Park field trip to let the kids see up close and personal the land forms we are learning about in class.
4. A mother pointed out that the August reading calendar hadn't been recalculated for the required reading minutes, so I am changing the home reading time required to be 70 points possible. Those children who earned the 100 points will just have bonus points. Sorry for any heartache this caused.

Curriculum:
Math: I've noticed that the students who still don't have their addition and subtraction facts memorized are really floundering. Please help them memorize these facts through 20 quickly. Then we'll worry about the multiplication tables. We work on those facts constantly in class.
Have a great week!
Carolyn
